Born in 1896 in Wahoo, Nebraska of Swedish descent, he was the first American composer to win the Prix de Rome. An ardent supporter of American music, he won the Pulitzer Prize in Music in 1944 for his Symphony no. 4, op. 34. He was the director of the Eastman School of Music from 1924 to 1964.
