Born in Monaco, Franz Schreker (1878-1934) spent much of his life in Berlin. It is said that growing Nazi influence created a nervous condition that led to his early death. Among his major works are the ballet Geburtstag der Infantin (The Birthday of the Infanta) and the operas Der Ferne Klang and Die Gezeichneten.
