Patriarch of a family of composers, Johann Strauss, Sr. (1804-1849) became an international star while touring with his dance orchestra. The Austrian Emperor named him "Director of Music for the Imperial-Royal Court Balls." His most noted compositions are the waltz Loreley-Rhein-Klänge and the Radetzky-Marsc, which honored the commander of the Austrian army.
