Rainey, Ma

Gertrude Pridgett "Ma" Rainey (1886?1939) was known as "The Mother of the Blues." Originally performing in vaudville and minstrel shows with her husband Will "Pa" Rainey, she later adopted the new blues style and was instrumental in popularizing the new music.
